We are coming off the heels of a respectable show and strolling right into 2009. We are in our final week of this series and it all leads up to Summerslam ’17. I will be doing a RawView of Summerslam ’17 that will be available next week. We open this show with PG wacky crazy DX and their antics. This is really the last year before I started watching back and I may have even caught this show live. I’m not sure and that kind of scares me as I start to watch as I don’t recall whether I watched it or not. As we start the final countdown 2001 Summerslam is right now the top spot as far as Summerslams go. Let’s see if the 2009 version can overtake it or at least crack the top five.
Rey Mysterio vs. Dolph Ziggler (Intercontinental Title Match): I’m awkwardly excited about this match as both guys are tremendous workers. We are watching Mysterio on the backside of his career and ZIggler entering his prime. We get off to a good pace and Mysterio hits an early moonsault block. Ziggler reverses a hurricanrana and man I’m already digging this and I can see why they started the show. You know Ziggler looks like Mr. Perfect, I’m not sure if it’s the hair or the move set but when I say that it’s because he makes everything look effortless. OUCH! Ziggler with a dropkick reversal from a crossbody attempt from Mysterio. We get a setup for the 619 but it’s reversed into a fameasser and I see that Ziggler was doing the DX tribute stuff in 2009. Really good back and forth stuff and Ziggler has won this crowd over with his performance as we are getting LOUD let’s go Ziggler chants. You know upon second review of ZIggler here, he actually reminds me more of Flyin Bryan Pillman than Mr. Perfect. Mysterio with a huracanrana reversal for the win for Mysterio. Ziggler came out of this match looking a lot better than going in I’m guessing.
MVP vs. Jack Swagger: We get awful MVP and Jack Swagger Pokey and Gumby jokes. Neither of these guys get me excited during the entrances which is awful because I’m so hyped from the last match. I will say MVP surprised me with his work rate at the last Summerslam. If you’ve never seen Jack Swagger in person you don’t truly understand how big he is. We start this match with some wrestling back and forth and MVP is hanging in there. We get rest holds which seems to last FOR..EH….VER in this match but not really. MVP finally hits a Ballin’ Elbow and Swagger reverses the playmaker for a two count. MVP reverses the running pump splash corner move and hits the playmaker to win. Not bad but not very good either.
JeriShow vs. Cryme Time (Unified Tag Team Titles): You know what I never understood is why WWE didn’t go the Harlem Heat route with Cryme Time after a while. Why didn’t they just transition them into a bad ass take no shit kind of team. The gimmick worked to get them over but slowly they could have moved away from it and just to two tough guys much like Harlem Heat. Rant Over. We get Jericho with the upper hand early and an early Walls of Jericho attempt. Of course that doesn’t work out for him and Big Show ends up in the ring. JTG gets beaten by Big Show until he’s able to make the hot tag early to Shad. Shad comes in fist of fury until he goes after Jericho and catches a Big Show spear. We get Shad being the baby face in peril now and he even breaks out of a Full Nelson. JTG now gets the hot tag and hits the Mug Shot on Jericho for a two count. Big Show sends Shad over the top rope which is an impressive visual. We get a Walls of Jericho, Rope Break, and then a KO Punch from Big Show for the finish. JeriShow retain the titles. Entertaining but still behind the opener for match of the night.
Kane vs. Great Khali: Why? I love Kane I do and Great Khali against Hogan and I’m in however Kane vs. Khali is not something I’ve ever said I want to see. Chop, Chop, Chop, Chop, Chop, Chop, Chop, Chop, HEAD CHOP! Interference, Kane overcomes interference but you know can’t hit a damn choke slam so instead goes to the running DDT for the win. I’m sorry if you were looking for in depth coverage of this match.
Degeneration X vs. Legacy: This is the moment I realized that I completely forgot Ted Dibiase Jr was a thing. Don’t get me wrong he has a helluva look and I’m assuming he’s not awful in the ring, is that a bad assumption? WOW Degeneration X gets a Hollywood style entrance equipped with tank and soldiers. We get the early attack by heels but the faces overcome and clean house spot to begin the match. Dibiase gets the upper hand by kicking HHH in the crotch chops. You know the visual of this is very good and feels very old school WWF. I love the combination of the two aging veterans and Rhodes/Dibiase look like a million dollars especially as a tag team. HHH tags HBK for the early hot tag and he cleans house however gets caught during the kip up. Some really great high spot reversals and signature reversals upcoming including the flying elbow, cross Rhodes and Sweet Chin Music. Really good back and forth with Cody Rhodes and HBK because well you know they are elite. …. …. ELITE. Really great action in the middle as Rhodes reverses the Sweet Chin Music and drops HBK but gets nailed with a pedigree. This match is a coming out party for Cody Rhodes as he is shining as bright as HBK and HHH you know two ELITE HOF superstars. HBK hits a desperation Sweet Chin Music for the win and this was fantastic. Very fun and it elevated Cody Rhodes even in a loss. How things dwindled for him I’ll never know because he delivered in this match.
Christian vs. William Regal (ECW Title): What? Is the ECW non match at Summesrlam a rib? Christian hits a killswitch and wins. Cool.
Randy Orton vs. John Cena (WWE Title Match): My first two reactions to this is haven’t we seen this before? Also to those who say CM Punk never main evented over Cena you can now reference this PPV. Straight fire from both men to begin the match as the slug it out fist over fist. Orton drops a “vintage” knee onto Cena. Yep you know a VINTAGE Orton move in 2009 when he was a part of the OVW class of 2002. Orton slows down the pace which bothers a lot of people I’ve found however I find he has great psychology and typically only does things that make sense. The two men lay this match out as they’ve fought before and know what’s coming Kudos to them for that. Orton goes into full Orton classic mode and hits the DDT and then sets up for an RKO but instead is tempted to Punt Cena in the head. We now get full Super Cena in comeback mode and whoa.. wait.. Orton hits the referee and walks out. Like for reals? Vince McMahon is out next to restart the match and Orton is like NOPE and walks out to get counted out. What do you know but Vince restarts the match AGAIN and Orton reverses the AA and does the heel foot on the ropes bit during a schoolboy for the win. BUT WAIT THERES MORE my goodness look Orton hits an RKO after interference and wins. Geez this PPV is like a sour patch kid first its sour then its sweet. I was ok with Orton vs. Cena but god can I get a legit finishes especially after that ECW title shit? I see why people are so angry at 2009 now.
Jeff Hardy vs. CM Punk (World Title TLC Match): When Vince was looking to make the lineup for this card I wondered after deciding on this just how odd this is. Two counter culture fan favorites who don’t have the IDEAL look but super over with the crowd is main eventing over the gold boys of the industry. Kudos to Vince and whoever else decided on this move. CM Punk is playing the villain perfectly as I’ve always found him to be a better heel than face. There’s something inherently unlikeable about the guy. We get an early introduction of chairs into this match as Punk smashes Hardy with one. By the way I went on about Punk but Hardy is super over at this point and could be argued as the most over guy in the company. Punk goes up the ladder quick however Hardy shoves it out from under him and already a chair shot and a fall off a ladder. We get a one man poetry in motion attempt but Punk catches him with an OPEN chair. Ouch! We get a cool spot where Hardy goes for the title however Punk catches him in a Go To Sleep. More back and forth and OUCH! Oh My a bad looking bump off the top of the ladder from Hardy. They are really using the ladder in this match and if you’ve read my articles before on Ladder Matches I like for it to be a build up to using the ladders. I feel like these two guys are using it a bit as a crutch and I’m not upset and it’s not bad but it feels a bit rushed. They now brawl onto the outside and Punk tries to collar Hardy with a chair and Hardy reverses it and hits Punk with a gunshot sounding chair shot of his own. These two are really letting each other beat the hell out of the other. Punk then gets put onto an announce table and Hardy pulls out what appears to be a ladder designed by Shane McMahon which means it’s one thousand foot tall. Hardy HITS THE SWANTON OFF THIS ONTO PUNK THROUGH THE TABLE MY GOODNESS!!!!!!!!!! Great facial expression by Punk at this point when Hardy goes back into the ring it’s the little things really. Punk and Hardy both end up on top of the ladder and Punk knocks Jeff off which is just amazing that he took yet another bump. Punk wins.

This is a roller coaster of a PPV where you have some really good matches like the main event, DX/Legacy and the opener and you have some all-time BAD stuff also on this card. I’m not sure if the good is good enough to outweigh the bad if I’m recommending someone watching this show. The match of the night is tough as I want to give it to Legacy and DX to show some love to Cody Rhodes but that Swanton Bomb and the hell Punk/hardy put themselves through was enough to win match of the night. We are entering 2010 next and until then be wawesome.
