Odd Reason Why There Was A ‘Superstar Shake-Up’ Instead Of A WWE Draft

After Wrestlemania 33, Vince McMahon announced that there would be a ‘Superstar Shake-Up’ for the rosters of RAW and Smackdown Live. WWE made a number of changes to each roster, with some big names switching sides like: Bray Wyatt, Charlotte, Alexa Bliss, Dean Ambrose, Kevin Owens and more.

Many fans have been wondering if the ‘Shake-Up’ was the replacement for the yearly draft that usually takes place during brand splits. Or if the company would still be doing a draft later on in the year.

Bryan Alvarez on a recent edition of Wrestling Observer Live (subscribe here), says that there are no plans for a WWE Draft later this year. The ‘Shake-Up’ was WWE’s way of changing up the rosters, without the need of doing another draft.

Why did WWE choose to go this route? It turns out that Vince McMahon reportedly has decided that he dislikes the term ‘draft’. This is why it was referred to as the ‘Superstar Shake-Up’ instead.

This should not come as a surprise to a lot of fans considering the stories that we have heard about Vince and his weird banning of words/terms. This includes requiring every WWE star to refer to the Wrestlemania 33 stadium as the ‘Citrus Bowl’ instead of Camping World Stadium. Also, him chewing out Braun Strowman backstage for saying ‘title shot’.

It still remains to be seen if WWE will continue to use ‘Superstar Shake-Up’ as a yearly thing. Vince can call it whatever he wants, but hopefully next year they keep some of the key elements of what made the drafts so fun.
