Matt Hardy was able to defeat Sheamus this past week on Monday Night RAW. As a result, he was able to pick the stipulation for the RAW Tag Team Title match. The Hardy Boyz will defend their titles at Extreme Rules against Sheamus & Cesaro.
Matt announced that he was choosing a steel cage match. This confused many fans. Why wouldn’t the Hardy Boyz choose a ladder (or TLC) match, something that is their ‘bread & butter’?
Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio (subscribe here), briefly mentioned that the reason they went with a steel cage match is because of the high amount of ladder matches recently.
NXT Takeover: Chicago saw DIY face off against the Authors of Pain in a ladder match. Also, the Hardy Boyz made their triumphant return to WWE in a ladder match at Wrestlemania 33. Plus, Money in the Bank takes place next month.
The idea is to change things up a little bit and that is why the steel cage match was booked instead.
Regardless of the stipulation, it should be a fun match. Most fans know Jeff Hardy’s history in steel cage matches and we are likely in for a treat at Extreme Rules.
