It was announced that the Hell in a Cell match between Shane McMahon and Kevin Owens will be ‘Falls Count Anywhere’. This was a bit confusing when first announced. This was since many fans assumed Hell in a Cell matches could always end anywhere. That is not the case.
Let’s speculate on why the match is now ‘Falls Count Anywhere’.
The first and most obvious potential reason is that WWE has some crazy planned. Shane McMahon is no stranger to high-risks. He could have something big planned like we saw at Wrestlemania 32 (or many other Shane matches). It seems unlikely that Shane stays inside the cell for the whole match.
This would allow them to avoid what happened at Wrestlemania 32 in Shane’s match with the Undertaker. After Shane jumped off the cell, he eventually had to be brought back inside of the ring by the Undertaker for the pin. ‘Falls Count Anywhere’ would have allowed Shane to get pinned right after the big bump.
Another idea comes from Bryan Alvarez of Wrestling Observer Radio. He speculated that there could be a very specific reason for the match being ‘Falls Count Anywhere’:
“So, what’s the point of announcing that it’s a Falls Count Anywhere match, except that maybe they were going over various ideas, and Shane decided, ‘You know what? I’m old and I have a family; I really don’t wanna kill myself.’ And so they’re gonna do a pre-tape with a stuntman of something really stupid happening backstage, and they can do the finish there and not risk anybody’s life.”
