Shinsuke Nakamura defeated John Cena this week on Smackdown Live to earn himself a WWE Championship match. As a result, he will be facing off against Jinder Mahal at Summerslam in one of the marquee matches of the night.
There has been a lot of rumors and speculation on the match since it was made official. Let’s go through some of it here.
There is some heavy speculation among fans that Shinsuke Nakamura will win the title, only to have Baron Corbin cash-in his Money in the Bank contract to become Champion. The idea would be to piss fans off that are happy Nakamura just won (and took the title off Jinder).
This very well could happen but Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscribe here) provided another perspective on the match. He suggests that it doesn’t really make sense to take the title off Jinder right now if you are just replacing him with Corbin. WWE hasn’t seen a drop in their viewership numbers since Jinder became Champion and they are clearly trying to grow their Indian market. When comparing Corbin and Jinder, they both offer similarities as Champion but Jinder provides the babyface appeal in India.
It seems like it will all come down to the push into India. If WWE is giving up on the Jinder experiment as Champion than Corbin could walk out with the belt. If they are sticking with it, we agree with Meltzer that it would be a bit of a strange move to go from Jinder to Corbin when Jinder offers that foreign appeal.
We will have to wait and see what happens. Just some extra things to think about!
