Did The Reigns And Cena Segment Go Off-Script?

The buzz after RAW this week had to do with the segment between Roman Reigns and John Cena. During the contract signing for their match at ‘No Mercy’, we saw both guys take (verbal) shots at one another. This included Reigns talking about Cena being a part-timer and having a ‘golden shovel’ to bury younger talent. Cena responded by trashing Reigns’ promo skills and for him being a bootleg version of John Cena.

The question after RAW from fans was if this segment was scripted or if it was a shoot.

Dave Meltzer on F4WOnline.com says that (almost) the entire promo was scripted by WWE writers. Here is an excerpt of what he said:

“The Roman Reigns/Cena verbal battle, which was almost completely scripted ahead of time and the key wording was mostly from the writing team and not anyone coming up with unapproved wording, was always scheduled on the show”

The only part that seemed not to be scripted was when Reigns forget one of his lines and paused. Cena responded with a jab at his promo skills.

Meltzer also confirmed the report of Samoa Joe being injured. Joe was supposed to face Cena on RAW but his injury nixed those plans. For those wondering, the promo segment between Reigns and Cena was always planned and was not thrown together due to the injury.

Cena took another shot at Reigns after RAW went off the air.
