WWE released the first 4 episodes of the Mae Young Classic tournament on August 28th. On September 4th, they released the remaining 4 episodes that bring us to the finale. The idea was for this to be a Netflix-style release where WWE fans could binge several episodes at a time.
This was a much different approach compared to the Cruiserweight Classic, which aired one episode a week for the duration of the tournament.
According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscribe here), the Mae Young Classic is a big hit so far.
Meltzer says that the first 8 episodes of the tournament are the top 8-watched shows on the WWE Network this week. This means that the first block of episodes (that were released last week) beat both NXT and 205 Live in viewership.
What this data seems to tell us is a few things: The first is that WWE fans are obviously enjoying the tournament and watching the women’s talent compete. The second is that the Netflix-style of release seems to have worked and we might see that more in the future. The third is that this likely means more tournaments in the future from WWE.
Here was Triple H’s response when asked if the tournament would lead to an all-women’s show.
