Emma was able to defeat Sasha Banks, Bayley, Dana Brooke and Alicia Fox on Monday Night RAW this week. As a result, she earned herself a match against Asuka at the Tables, Ladders and Chairs Pay-Per-View.
According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscribe here), there is a reason why WWE chose Emma as Asuka’s debut opponent.
Emma was reportedly always the plan to be the first person to wrestle Asuka. This is because they have worked well together in the past and have put on a high-quality match with one another. For those that don’t remember, they faced off at NXT Takeover: London back in December of 2015. This was only the second NXT Takeover event for Asuka. Her and Emma put on one of the best matches of the night.
For those that wanted Asuka’s opponent to be Sasha Banks or Bayley, the feeling according to Meltzer is that those matches will be properly built towards in the future. Asuka’s debut will be all about making her look strong and it makes sense to save those matches for later.
Everybody and their sister knows that Asuka will likely be winning her debut match. The key will be to make her look good in her first appearance on the main roster. It looks like WWE trusts Emma in this role.
