Kairi Sane defeated Shayna Baszler to win the inaugural Mae Young Classic tournament. Many fans were confused as to why there was no interaction or angle between the different groups of Four Horsewomen. A big theme of the tournament seemed to be teasing conflict between WWE’s version of the Four Horsewomen and the other group led by Ronda Rousey.
Ronda Rousey, Jassamyn Duke, Charlotte Flair, Bayley and Becky Lynch were all in attendance at the show. Nothing happened to further the storyline though.
According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscribe here), there is a potential reason why it didn’t happen.
Meltzer says that the decision was made early in the week to make the Mae Young Classic finals all about Kairi Sane and her victory. This would be instead of focusing on the Four Horsewomen.
The Four Horsewomen angle will be saved for another show. The decision was made to keep the focus on Kairi and not because the Four Horsewomen storyline is being scrapped.
Our take: A pretty smart decision in my mind. If WWE had Kairi Sane win the tournament, only to have some sort of big interaction between Ronda and Charlotte (for example), it would have taken the focus away from her win. Some fans were complaining that the tournament already felt overshadowed by all of the Horsewomen teasing, so maybe it would have been overkill.
This way, Sane has her moment and WWE can still build towards the Horsewomen angle on a different show.
