Finn Balor faced off against Kane on Monday Night RAW this week. Kane was victorious after hitting three straight chokeslams. This came as a bit of a surprise to many fans since Balor just picked up a big win the night prior at Tables, Ladders & Chairs against AJ Styles.
A lot of fans on social media questioned this decision. Here is a rumor on some of the backstage reaction to Kane defeating Balor.
Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio (subscribe here) was very critical of WWE’s decision to have Balor lose to Kane in that spot.
Meltzer says that he asked around backstage and people who always defend Vince McMahon’s decisions had no explanation as to why Kane had to defeat Balor:
“There is no explanation, there is no defense, he [Vince] just whiffed”
The idea seems to be to get Kane ready for a match against Braun Strowman and build him up. Meltzer questions why WWE didn’t have Kane defeat anyone else on the roster since it slows down the momentum of Balor. Especially silly if WWE plans on having Balor face Brock Lesnar in the next few months, which has been a rumor floating around for the past several weeks.
Overall, a decision that left a lot of people scratching their heads.
