Akira Tozawa’s Short Title Reign

The first title change of the night at Summerslam happened on the kickoff show. Neville defeated Akira Tozawa to win back his WWE Cruiserweight Championship. Tozawa won the title from Neville 6 days earlier on Monday Night RAW.

This was very confusing to fans after the match was over. Why would WWE have Tozawa win the title only to have him lose it a few days later?

Here are some rumors floating around about the title change.

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio (subscribe here), the original title change [Tozawa defeating Neville] was decided on Monday afternoon by Vince McMahon.

Meltzer says that the title change was only done for a surprise on television. The long-term plan was always Neville as Champion.

This leads to a bit of a debate. Would you have preferred Neville to have not lost the title at all? Or are you okay with the title change to prove that he isn’t unbeatable? Some fans will prefer the shock value, others will prefer long and dominant title reigns.

  1. Seems pointless really. Instead of giving him a reign that would be really hard to beat they’ve capped it just to hand him back the title next match. Makes Neville look complacent and Tozawa look like he just got lucky, not good.
