Something that has been desired by a lot of wrestling fans over the years is a John Cena heel turn. Many fans have wanted to see him shock the wrestling world and turn into a bad guy, similar to what Hulk Hogan did when he joined the NWO.
It turns out, the idea for Cena to turn heel was also heavily desired by Stephanie McMahon, someone who has a lot of say backstage of WWE.
Stephanie was recently a guest on the Cheap Heat podcast hosted by Peter Rosenberg. She was asked about a Cena heel turn and why it never happened.
“At one point in his career I really wanted to see him turn heel. I wanted it, as a fan, and I also thought it was the right thing to do. But it turns out I was wrong”
If she fought for it to happen:
“Oh yeah, totally I did, yeah. But I’m glad we didn’t go that way. I think now it would be odd for John to turn heel. I guess never say never because anything can happen in WWE but I don’t think I would really miss it. I think that we would miss him, I don’t know that we would miss the heel turn.”

It looks like fans shouldn’t expect to see Cena turning heel anytime soon. Also coincides with the story about Cena getting gear made for a heel turn, until the idea was eventually scrapped. Looks like this will remain a famous ‘What If’ in wrestling history.
