WWE has announced that the King of the Ring tournament will be returning. We have put together some mistakes that WWE needs to avoid when booking this years tournament.
Mistake #5: Not Giving Tournament Matches Enough Time
I will start with an important one. The tournament is called the King of the Ring, so my hope is that tournament matches are given a decent amount of time.
Looking at the current field of competitors, there is a ton of talent here. I think that it would be a big mistake to give us a bunch of 5-minute matches. WWE needs to allow the competitors to shine as this will be a big moment for a lot of them. A guy like Buddy Murphy is known for his in-ring talent so it would be stupid to have one of his matches go 5-minutes. Give him at least 10-minutes to showcase to fans what he can do.
I am not saying that every match needs to be 15 minutes plus. I just want to see each match in the tournament receive a decent amount of time. Plus, RAW is 3-hours, so it is not like they don’t have enough time to work with. There should be plenty of extra time for these guys to have solid matches.
In my opinion, it would be a mistake to feature a bunch of short matches.
Mistake #4: Not Using The Tournament To Make New Stars
WWE also has a big opportunity to build new stars in this tournament. With a few wins and great matches, it could really help raise the stock of some Superstars on the roster.
Take for example someone like Cedric Alexander. He is a guy who actually got signed by WWE because of his impressive performance in the Cruiserweight Classic. That was a prime example of letting a talent showcase their abilities. As a result, the fans ended up getting behind him. They could easily do this with a few guys during the King of the Ring tournament. Book an underdog or two to go deep in the tournament, putting on great matches in the process. I could easily see WWE fans getting behind another guy as they did with Cedric a few years ago.
I always see tournaments as a way to build new stars. Superstars don’t have to necessarily win but they can still put on great performances and gain a lot of momentum and fans in the process.
It would be a mistake to have all of the established names win their matches. They need to mix in a few new guys and let them see what they can do.
