Cody Rhodes participated in the 2016 Battle of Los Angeles (BOLA). The BOLA is an annual independent wrestling tournament in North America, run and promoted by Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. The tournament features many of the top independent wrestlers from around the world. During his appearance in the tournament, Rhodes had an incredible introduction.
His wife Brandi (Eden Styles in WWE) was his personal ring announcer for his match against Sami Callihan. She billed him as ‘the grandson of a plumber’, paying obvious homage to the ‘American Dream’ Dusty Rhodes. The crowd also erupted when said he was the “Star that left them in the dust”. An obvious shot at his old Stardust character in WWE.

Rhodes won his first round match but was beaten by the eventual tournament winner: Marty Scurll in the second round.
