Former WWE writer Vince Russo thinks a lot of WWE stars are lost when it comes to their characters.
You might remember Vince Russo as the one time WCW World Heavyweight Champion. You also might remember him as a former writer for both WWE and WCW back in the ‘Attitude Era’. You can usually catch Vince Russo online these days talking about professional wrestling on some medium (especially on his podcast – Vince Russo: The Brand). In a recent interview with WrestleZone Radio, Russo says that a lot of WWE talent doesn’t know what their characters are. He mentions Dean Ambrose specifically who is a product of poor writing.
Here is what he said:
“I think a lot of these guys are lost. I think the lack of character development. I’m talking about week to week to week to week of refining characters. I think a lot of these guys are lost. I think a lot of these guys don’t know who they are or who they are supposed to be. We have to remember, bro, that a lot of these guys are young. A lot of these guys are green. Unless they are getting constant attention and somebody is there with the detail to everything they do and when to do it and why they’re doing it. I just feel a lot of these guys are lost. Let’s take Ambrose for example. He’s “The Lunatic Fringe.” What does that mean? Just because you label the guy “A Lunatic” doesn’t make him a lunatic. That’s in the writing and the storytelling. The situations you put him in. A guy’s not going to be a lunatic because you say he’s a lunatic. I think there are a lot of guys like Ambrose that because they haven’t been properly defined I think their heads are screwed up and a lot of them don’t even know what their character is” (Source: WrestleZone Daily).
