Wrestlemania 34 was officially confirmed by WWE to take place in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The event will take place on April 8th, 2018. Many fans were upset that WWE chose to return to New Orleans so soon, considering Wrestlemania 30 took place only a few short years ago.
F4WOnline.com provided an update on the situation, saying that one of the biggest reasons why WWE officials decided to return to New Orleans so soon is because 2018 marks a special year for the city. 2018 will be the 300th birthday of the city of New Orleans and there is going to be a lot of promotion for this special tricentennial year.
New Orleans city officials pitched to the WWE that Wrestlemania would be a huge part of the tricentennial celebration for the city. New Orleans is already an incredibly popular tourist destination and it is safe to assume that the city will be buzzing for a year-long celebration.
Dave Meltzer on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio (subscribe here), says that there were 15 cities that WWE was considering. He specifically mentions Philadelphia and St. Louis as destinations that were heavily considered to host the event.

It is also noted that the event goes to the highest (or most attractive) bid. It doesn’t have to do with stadium size for the event. The Mercedes-Benz Superdome holds 75,000 which is much less compared to last year that held over 100,000 people (according to WWE). This is positive news if you are a fan from a city that doesn’t have a massive stadium for the future.
At the end of the day it was a business decision. WWE will likely get a ton of buzz and money by returning to New Orleans in such a big year for the city. There are many other cities that deserve to host a Wrestlemania but at the end of the day, WWE is going to do what is best from a business perspective.
