Now that it is looking like Tommaso Ciampa will be vacating the NXT Championship due to injury, we have to start to look at who will be the next person to hold the gold. Here is how we rank the top 5 candidates to become the next NXT Champion.
5) Roderick Strong (Wildcard)
I will admit off the bat that I love the Undisputed Era as a faction and I don’t want to see them split up. While saying that, the injury to Ciampa could force Triple H to drastically change his plans.
Roderick Strong had a very successful singles career prior to joining WWE. This includes stints as the ROH World Champion and also the PWG World Champion. How about Strong splits up from the group and goes after the NXT Championship?
This would lead to a match between Roderick Strong and Adam Cole for the NXT Championship. I am sure that they would tear down the house.
As I mentioned prior, this would be a desperation play by WWE. It would really shake things up though and would give them a program that could last over the next several months. Strong is a wildcard but I wouldn’t completely count him out.
4) Velveteen Dream
The only reason that Dream is so high up on this list is because he is currently holding the NXT North American Championship. If he wasn’t, he would be a lot higher for me.
I think that a lot of fans would be happy with an NXT Title reign for Dream. His character work is excellent and he has already proved that he is strong in the ring. He has so much potential, considering that he is only 23 years old.
It isn’t an impossible outcome. WWE could have Dream hold the NXT North American Championship and NXT Championship at the same time. It wouldn’t be the first time that someone held two belts in WWE.
Still, I am not sure that they will pull the trigger.
