Things have become very interesting in regards to the WWE Title picture at the Royal Rumble. Kevin Owens defeated AJ Styles on Smackdown Live this week in a non-title match. AJ had the match won, but the referee was distracted by Shane McMahon. This led to Owens picking up the win with a roll-up.
So what does this mean for the WWE Championship match at the Rumble? Let’s speculate.
Based on the ending of Smackdown Live, what I think is going to happen is a fatal 4-way for the title. Let me explain.
Owens now has a pinfall victory over Styles, which gives him a claim for a WWE Title match. We have already seen Owens vs Styles multiple times this year, so I don’t think that we will be getting a singles match. I think that it is likely that Sami Zayn also gets added to this match. Styles will likely be feuding with Owens & Zayn over the next few weeks and Zayn will find a way to get included.
In my scenario, Shane McMahon decides to add himself to the match, making it a fatal 4-way: AJ Styles vs Sami Zayn vs Kevin Owens vs Shane McMahon. Here are my reasons:
- Shane would add himself in to help even the odds against Sami & Kevin. If it was a triple threat, the odds would be severely stacked against Styles. Shane already wants to get his hands on Sami & Kevin, so it would make sense for him to add himself in.
- There was a bit of tension teased between Styles and Shane based on how Smackdown Live this week ended.
- This would also continue the tension between Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon. Shane adding himself to a World Title match could be the spark of more conflict between them since Smackdown isn’t supposed to be about them.
