This week’s episode of Monday Night RAW featured some great storytelling involving the Shield. Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre tried to drive a wedge between the group, telling Dean Ambrose that he is underappreciated. This was teasing Dean turning on the group, which has been a popular fan theory for months. In the end, Ambrose ended up siding with his Shield brothers to close the show.
This got me thinking about the long-term future of the Shield and I wanted to share my speculation on where I think that this is going.
Wrestlemania 35 next year takes place in MetLife Stadium. This happens to be the same place where the Shield made their Wrestlemania debuts back in 2013. For those who don’t remember, the Shield defeated Big Show, Randy Orton, and Sheamus at Wrestlemania 29 in MetLife Stadium.
To me, I think that it would make sense for WWE to use that history for Wrestlemania 35. The biggest possible match that they could do for the Shield (in my opinion), is a triple threat between members. That would be Roman Reigns vs Dean Ambrose vs Seth Rollins for the WWE Universal Championship. If WWE plans on doing a Shield triple threat match at Wrestlemania one day, I can’t think of a better place than the same stadium where they made their Wrestlemania debuts. I can already picture the promo videos, documenting the Shield’s first match in MetLife several years ago to their journey to Wrestlemania 35.
So How Do We Get There?
There are two ways that WWE could do it. The first would be one of the members turns on the group, leading to all three being in conflict with one another. The other option would be that they do the match as a competitive rivalry between brothers and don’t have anyone turn heel. My personal preference would be Dean or Roman turning heel to set this one up. While saying that, I would understand if they don’t turn anyone in order to keep the Shield together for future matches down the road. The match would likely be better though if a heel turn was involved.
Looking at the RAW roster, I think that this probably makes the most sense as the Universal Championship match at Wrestlemania 35. I think that Braun Strowman will be facing a big name like the Undertaker, Brock Lesnar or Triple H at the event, which will take him out of the Universal Title picture.
