News recently broke that Io Shirai is likely heading over to WWE. For those who don’t know, she is considered as one of the top female wrestler’s in the world. For a bit of reference, she was named the Japanese Women’s MVP in 2015, 2016, and 2017.
Dave Meltzer provided some more details on Io signing with WWE on Wrestling Observer Radio (subscribe here). Here are some of the highlights:
– Io still needs to undergo a medical exam from WWE doctors. For those who don’t know, it looked like she was signing with WWE last year but the company passed on her due to a heart issue. Io was fully cleared by doctors in Japan and continued to work over the past year.
– Meltzer says that she is coming to WWE for less money. She was making a killing in merchandise sales working in Stardom. Even though she will be making less money, she wants to prove herself.
– Io dropped the Wonder of Stardom title to Momo Watanabe recently which led to some rumors that she was coming to WWE. Meltzer says that this wasn’t related to Io leaving for WWE as Stardom wanted the title on Momo. Stardom also didn’t know Io was leaving until today.
– Asuka and Io are apparently not friends. Meltzer says there is some heat between them.
Would be a pretty huge signing for WWE and the Women’s division if it comes to fruition.
