Rumor Roundup: Why WWE Is Using The “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” Tagline, Original Plans For Charlotte, More

1) Why WWE Is Using The “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” Tagline

According to journalist Tom Colohue, one of the reasons why WWE is using the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” tagline for Randy Orton vs Edge is for search engine purposes.

When you type “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” into Google, more results are now going to come up about Orton vs Edge, instead of matches from other promotions.

Colohue says that this is similar to the reason why WWE did the drunk driving storyline with Jeff Hardy. There will now be some kayfabe results mixed in when you search for ‘Jeff Hardy arrested”. Here is an excerpt from his report:

Both the branding of the match between Edge and Orton at Backlash and the recent drunk driving arrest storyline for Jeff Hardy have being written in a way so as to create a long-term dominance of internet airwaves. The branding of the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” has apparently been written so that a casual viewer is more likely to stumble upon Edge Vs Orton – rather than a match from an alternative wrestling company. Edge and Orton’s match has seemingly been selected for this purpose due to the longevity of both men’s connection with the casual wrestling audience.

My Take:

  • This is actually smart marketing by WWE. I will be interested to check back on this search in like 6 months and see if they were successful at manipulating the search engines.
