1) Why AOP Was Released
News broke a few days ago that WWE released AOP from the company. Journalist Tom Colohue has provided some additional details on why Akam and Rezar were let go.
Here is what he said about their release:
“To my knowledge, the only information I got that I tweeted about pretty much immediately after finding out about the information. I reached out, and the information I got was pretty much simple and that there was only a matter of time because of a number of setbacks that have been experienced, which essentially meant that someone was always going to give up on AOP. I wasn’t told who, I was just told someone had given up, and at that point they just wanted to write them off and call it quits. There was apparently another injury setback that hasn’t been announced just yet.”
Dave Meltzer also noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that Paul Heyman had big plans for AOP when he was still in charge of RAW. These plans ended up getting scrapped by Vince McMahon:
“When Paul Heyman was there, Paul Heyman wanted to make them his Road Warriors and Levesque did to because he even brought in Ellering for them and they were total Road Warrior rip-offs. It’s interesting that those two wanted to make them into Road Warriors and then Vince just decided whatever…”
My Take:
- I feel like this was a bad decision by WWE as AOP was really good when they were healthy. They are big guys who can also work. I guess it was injuries that ultimately did it but I still think that it was a mistake.
