Rumor Roundup: Vince McMahon Is Unhappy With NXT, Change In Mentality For WWE, More

Here are some of the latest WWE rumors that are floating around.

5) Backstage Reaction To The “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” Tagline

According to journalist Tom Colohue, the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” tagline is not being received well in WWE.

Colohue says that the tagline is very unpopular backstage. Here is what he wrote:

The “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” concept has proven unpopular with a backstage source informing me that they found the whole thing “ridiculous”, insisting that “nobody’s happy about it.” It has also proven unpopular with fans on social media. Regardless of the branding, the match has already been filmed and WWE Backlash is just a few short days away, so we will all have to wait and see just how good the match is.

My Take:

  • I have seen the theory floating around that WWE was planning to use this tagline for a show in Saudi Arabia. After the Saudi show got canceled, Vince McMahon just decided to keep the tagline and move it to Backlash. I actually think this makes sense and would be similar to what they did for the ‘Greatest Royal Rumble’.

4) Vince McMahon’s Change In Mentality

According to Dave Meltzer in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Vince McMahon’s mentality has changed over the past few months.

Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, Vince was focused on planning for the future. This includes long-term plans like bringing back the XFL and putting Paul Heyman in charge of RAW (and building future stars). After the pandemic, Vince’s mentality has changed to focus more on the short-term:

It’s said by those close to the situation that once COVID-19 started that McMahon’s mentality changed about everything. Previously, the mentality was all about the future. The XFL was a long-term play. Raw under Heyman was a long-term play. Expanding NXT into Europe and Japan, and opening up other markets under Paul Levesque was a long-term play. Now the mentality is to worry about what you have and think about now, even though the company is going to be more profitable this year and next than probably any time in its existence.

My Take:

  • I am not surprised by this as ratings have been dipping pretty bad since the pandemic started. Still, it is a mistake for WWE to not build towards the future.
