Rumor Roundup: King Of The Ring Plans, Why Bronson Reed Was Released, More

3) Backstage Note On The John Cena-Roman Reigns Feud

Things got personal this week in the feud between John Cena and Roman Reigns. According to @Wrestlevotes, WWE felt the need to ramp up the heat in the feud because some felt that the build had been lackluster.

Here is what the account Tweeted:

Source in creative said an objective for tonight’s SmackDown was to really amp up the rivalry between Reigns & Cena. The match will sell itself on names alone, but some feel the build has been lackluster.

My Take:

  • I would say this week was fantastic and I loved seeing them take shots at one another on the mic. I do agree that this probably should have happened a few weeks ago though.

2) WWE Was In Talks To Buy CMLL A Few Years Ago

According to Dave Meltzer in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE was in talks a few years to buy CMLL (Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre).

Here is what Meltzer wrote:

While not known about, there were talks a few years back of WWE buying CMLL. WWE wanted to run Mexico with the idea it could get the cream of the cream talent in Mexico and then groom some of them for the U.S. market. The belief was that if they owned CMLL and got all the top talent, that AAA wouldn’t be able to keep its talent and they’d have the best of both. Where the deal fell apart was for CMLL to sell, they wanted selling the arenas as part of the deal and WWE didn’t want to own so many older arenas.

My Take:

  • Not surprised by this as I know WWE wanted to take over Globally a few years ago (and probably still do). Interesting to hear that they came close to buying CMLL.
