1) How WWE Planned To Use Gronk Before His Release
News broke this week that Rob Gronkowski (aka Gronk) was released by WWE. This came after he dropped the 24/7 Championship to R-Truth on RAW.
According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE originally had plans for two matches for Gronk.
Gronk was scheduled to wrestle at Summerslam. He was also going to wrestle at the Saudi Arabia event that was originally planned for the end of the year. Here is what Meltzer said (h/t to Ringside News for the quotes below):
“So the deal is that once he signed with the Bucs it was part of the deal that he can not do pro wrestling because he was signed to a deal. He was gonna do what he did at WrestleMania and he was gonna go to SummerSlam which was gonna be the big one. So he was gonna do the end of the year show in Saudi Arabia. That was the multi-event contract was those three events.”
“He’s not doing any of them. He asked for his release. It was a mutual release. I don’t know if they had it in his contract that if he decides to play football again then he gets his release, I would strongly assume that he had that in his contract and then he decided to play football and that’s his release.”
My Take:
- I like Gronk so I am a bit bummed that we aren’t going to see him have a legitimate match. It would have been an amazing atmosphere for him at Summerslam in Boston. He probably have gotten booed since he decided to leave the New England Patriots.
