Rumor On The Original Plans For Rusev’s Debut On The WWE Main Roster

In the new book “Shocking Wrestling Plans You Won’t Believe Almost Happened”, former WWE writer Kevin Eck shared the original plans for Rusev on the WWE main roster.

For those who don’t remember, Rusev went on a dominant run when he was called up to the WWE main roster. He didn’t lose for 146 days until he lost to John Cena at Wrestlemania 31.

It turns out that the original plans for Rusev on the main roster were quite different than what we got. He was originally going to be a comedy character before they changed their minds to turn him into a monster heel. Here is a quote from Eck (via Sportskeeda):

“We started coming up with pitches for him as a comedy act, but we were told that Triple H envisioned Rusev as a monster heel so we had better forget about the character being played for laughs.”

As we posted several months ago, Rusev also revealed that there was a pitch to turn his character into a genie when he was in NXT. You can read more about that here.

How would you have felt if WWE went this route with Rusev?
