Kevin Owens turned heel on this week’s episode of Smackdown Live. This came after Owens attacked Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods to close the episode.
Although not official yet, it seems clear that we are heading towards Kevin Owens vs Kofi Kingston for the WWE Championship at Money in the Bank.
According to a rumor, these were not the original plans for Kofi’s first Title defense.
In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscribe here), Dave Meltzer says that the original plans were for Kofi to face Daniel Bryan at Money in the Bank. Those plans were scrapped because Bryan is currently out with an undisclosed injury.
Randy Orton and Rowan were two names who were also considered for Kofi’s first Title defense. WWE ultimately went with Owens instead. Meltzer adds that WWE planned to keep Owens as a babyface but the injury to Bryan caused them to change their minds and turn him heel.
