One of the biggest talking points from RAW was Sami Zayn name-dropping ‘AEW’ on the episode this week. He said: “You could ask me anything. You could have asked me about AEW.”
WWE has since edited out Sami’s comment from their Youtube channel. One thing is clear, it has gotten people talking.
We have the latest rumor to pass your way about Sami’s ‘AEW’ line. This comes on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio (subscribe here).
Dave Meltzer indicated that he was told the line was scripted. Here is what he said (h/t to Ringside News for the quotes below):
“The AEW line was scripted then they pulled it from the video afterwards and I actually asked someone what’s going on and it’s just like all I heard was ‘it was so f*cking stupid.’”
“Okay, if it’s not scripted then [Sami Zayn] is gonna be suspended. If you go against the script on live TV and say AEW they’ll suspend you for sure. They’re not going to fire you because they won’t fire anybody, obviously.”
“I was just told and the person who told me should know because it’s in the meeting.”
Dave’s co-host, Bryan Alvarez, said that he was told Sami went off script. They eventually agreed that it was scripted and WWE is trying to “work the boys”.
My Take: I agree that it was scripted. WWE likely wanted to be edgy and get a line in about ‘AEW’ while they are the hot topic of conversation. Plus, Sami’s gimmick is basically mocking the ‘smark’ fans, so it makes sense for him to be the guy to deliver the ‘AEW’ line.
