Original Plans For The U.S Title Open Challenge At The Royal Rumble

Bobby Roode defended his WWE United States Championship on the Royal Rumble kickoff show. He held an open challenge, that was accepted by Mojo Rawley. Roode went on to defeat Mojo to retain his belt.

It turns out that this wasn’t the original plan for the match.

Mike Johnson of PWInsider is reporting that Dolph Ziggler was originally penciled in to face Bobby Roode in the open challenge.

The decision was made over the weekend to move Ziggler’s return to the Rumble match instead. Ziggler entered in the number 30 spot and was eliminated pretty quickly.

According to the report, Ziggler will be on Smackdown on Tuesday, so it is possible that he starts a program up with Bobby Roode on the show.

  1. I feel like Ziggler is just the unbookable talent of the century. I don’t mean that in the way that he’s not any good, I mean that it seems like no matter what way they book him it just doesn’t work out like it was meant to work out. The biggest factor in my opinion is that a lot of his biggest and most well received moments were in front of “Wrestling Savvy” crowds, and then the next night he’s in front of a regular crowd and all the momentum is killed. Ziggler can’t be juggled like that, either make him a favorite to the hardcore fans, or put him in a program that earns him regular fans, its been terrible watching him passed between both.
