This is a match that certainly isn’t being booked for the hardcore wrestling fans. It is being booked for the casual viewers and mainstream audience.

And that is not necessarily a bad thing. John Cena teaming with his girlfriend: Nikki Bella (who is a big star in her own right) will have mainstream appeal. Nikki has grown a large following outside of wrestling for her work in Total Bellas and Total Divas. Like it or not, they both have mainstream appeal.

Example of their drawing power: The backstage segment with Cena, Nikki, Carmella and James Ellsworth already has almost 1 million views on YouTube (as of writing this)…

WWE’s goal is to get the most eyes on the product as possible. This match could get casual viewers to subscribe to the WWE Network to see what happens between Nikki and Cena. From a business standpoint, the match makes a lot of sense.

As much as the hardcore fans will dislike it, WWE needs to appeal to the mainstream audience for the event to do well.
