Reason #3 – No Matter What, We Have A Part Time Champion
Let’s face it, Brock Lesnar does work part-time with his contract giving him a limited amount of dates and live events to work. He has been billed as a special attraction ever since he defeated The Undertaker at WrestleMania to become the one in 21-1.
Following this historic win, he forcefully entered John Cena into Suplex City at SummerSlam and won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. I loved seeing Brock Lesnar as the champion, because a few years ago I was on the “John Cena Sucks” bandwagon; however, there was a cost for “The Beast Incarnate” becoming champion. He did not defend his title for 3 months, only having one title defense at Night of Champions in September against John Cena. Lesnar missed the Hell in a Cell, Survivor Series, and TLC pay-per-views in 2014 and he was the champion. He then returned and defended the title at Royal Rumble in a fantastic match against john Cena and Seth Rollins, and at WrestleMania against Roman Reigns.
If the rumors are true and Goldberg defeats Kevin Owens at Fastlane, leading to a WWE Universal title match at WrestleMania, and Lesnar defeats Goldberg, there is a possibility that Lesnar’s run will be the same as his 2014-2015 run and the WWE can’t afford that.
In my opinion, Goldberg returning was a marketing ploy for the WWE to get some extra sales on WWE 2K17, to create a “Once in a Lifetime” opportunity for the younger fans to see what Goldberg was like. It’s a smart marketing move, being as people are buying tickets and the game. However, Goldberg becoming champion at his age is a slap in the face of the “New Era.”
Sure, it will be cool to see one more title run from the legendary Goldberg, but why not utilize the younger talent like Cesaro, or shoot, even Kevin Owens could still be the champion. Kevin Owens as champion, with the help of Chris Jericho, has been easily one of the most entertaining things about RAW. For the WWE to put the title on Goldberg makes it seem like they do not trust their younger talent to put on a main-event caliber match at WrestleMania.
