Reason #4 – The Score Is Already Settled
In a typical Best of 3 series, which appears to be the way this is being promoted, if an opponent beats you in two out of the three matches, then that person wins the series. There is no disputing the winner as it is already clear, and that winner is Goldberg. If you are a younger viewer and don’t have access to the WWE Network, you are probably wondering why. Let’s take a dive back into history.
The year was 2004, at the No Way Out pay-per-view. It was Eddie Guerrero vs Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship. Prior to this event, Goldberg and Brock Lesnar entered a rivalry, which would culminate at WrestleMania 20. Before the event, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin gave Goldberg a ticket to SmackDown’s exclusive pay-per-view. This was in order for Goldberg to watch the match as he was banned from the arena as a competitor. After he gave the ticket, Steve Austin said “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”
Fast forward to the match, the ref is knocked out, Goldberg jumps the barricade and spears Brock Lesnar. Eddie delivers a Frog Splash and claims the WWE Championship. At WrestleMania 20, Goldberg and Brock Lesnar squared off and Goldberg came out on top.
Fast forward 12 years later at Survivor Series, Goldberg beats Brock Lesnar in shocking fashion in 90 seconds. This caps the best of three series that the WWE promoted ever since Goldberg returned.
Had Brock won at Survivor Series, it would tie the series; therefore making sense for them to have one more match at WrestleMania.
