Looks like the WWE is trying to bring prestige back to cruiserweight wrestling. The WWE recently announced that a new global cruiserweight series has been announced for the WWE Network starting in July.
Here is the official announcement:
“GLOBAL CRUISERWEIGHT SERIES — SERIES PREMIERE WEDNESDAY, JULY 13 AT 9 P.M. ET
For the first time ever, WWE invites cruiserweights from all over the world to compete in the inaugural Global Cruiserweight Series. Thirty-two of the greatest in-ring competitors under 205 lbs. will descend upon Full Sail University in Orlando, Fla., and collide for 10 weeks to earn the right to call themselves the best cruiserweight in the world”
Interesting news! Love the idea to give smaller wrestlers more exposure. Will be interesting to see if the WWE now goes on a tear with signing smaller guys for this special. Love that the WWE is expanding and trying out new things.
This will give small wrestlers a chance to really shine make their claim in the WWE which has traditionally been a big man’s business. With companies like Lucha Underground doing well with a high-flying style, it’s great to see the WWE take a page out of their books.
Would be great if they invited top guys from other companies to compete!
