Bret Hart Reveals His Feelings About The ‘Chicago Screwjob’ at WWE Payback

I had a lot of readers share their displeasure about the end of Natalya vs Charlotte or the ‘Chicago Screwjob’ at WWE Payback. Referee Charles Robinson rang the bell and claimed Nattie tapped, similar to the end of the infamous Montreal Screwjob where Bret Hart was screwed out of his title back in 1997. Bret on the recent episode of the Sharpshooter Show, says the Screwjob angle was flat and unoriginal. We have seen the  infamous angle parodied in WWE storylines multiple times since 1997.

Here is what he said:

“I mostly just dealt with Vince on it. That was Vince’s concept I guess. I thought it was pretty flat, to be honest. I told him that. Initially the idea was that at the end I was just going to stand with my hands on my hips or something in the middle of the aisle way and block Ric Flair from leaving the ring. I remember going, “That’s pretty lame.” I just said, “I think we can do better than that.” It was my suggestion that I could give Ric a couple shots, knock him down and put him in The Sharpshooter. Maybe Nattie could do a Sharpshooter at the same time and we could end on that note. So, I’ll take full credit for the better pop of the match. As far as the ending, I’ll say now that I thought it was pretty flat and unoriginal. Kind of, been done a lot” (Source: Sharpshooter Show).

Fair point from Bret. It did make sense though as the controversial finish allows the WWE to keep the story between Charlotte and Nattie going. Let us know what you think of Bret’s comments and if enjoyed the ‘Chicago Screwjob’ ending of the match at WWE Payback.
