Backstage News On How WWE Announcers Were Told To Call The Lesnar-Goldberg Match

Brock Lesnar and Goldberg faced off at Survivor Series in what was called a ‘Mega-Match’ and ‘Fantasy Warfare’. The wrestling world was shocked when Goldberg defeated Brock in just over a minute, without the ‘Beast Incarnate’ getting a single shot in.

According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter (Subscribe here), the WWE announce crew were told to call this match like it was a real ‘fight’. The goal was to emulate the UFC and give the match that ‘big fight feel’. If you watch the match back, you will notice Michael Cole and the rest of the crew calling it very differently than the matches we saw prior.

The idea of Goldberg winning so quickly was to emulate the UFC style of fights where anything can happen at all times. Fans have been conditioned to know that when their main event match starts at 10:30 (ET), it is probably going until 11:00 (ET). This mirrored a UFC 1st round knockout as the match was over in just over a minute.

WWE wanted to shock their audience and they did exactly that. If you polled 100 fans prior to the match, I don’t think any would have predicted Lesnar losing in a squash match. People have been debating this for the past few days and WWE certainly achieved their goal of shocking the crowd.

Good or bad, the match has people talking. It is too early to tell if WWE’s strategy of booking this angle as a legit fight will pay off. It is looking that way right now as I think WWE can sell a Wrestlemania match between these two. Goldberg has been announced for the Royal Rumble but you better believe Brock will want some redemption.
