One of the biggest surprises at Wrestlemania 34 was Brock Lesnar retaining the Universal Championship against Roman Reigns. Many fans believed it was a lock that Reigns would be walking out of the event with the Title.
Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio (subscribe here), provided some more details on what happened.
Meltzer compared it to the Undertaker’s streak being broken in the sense that very few people were told backstage. Almost nobody knew that Lesnar would be retaining. This includes none of the writers and even the lead producers. They all thought that Reigns was winning the Title.

Meltzer says that the original plan was in fact for Roman to win the match. He doesn’t know exactly when WWE decided to change this but it wasn’t at the last-second. It could have been in the last week or so.
Also, the referee of the match apparently didn’t know Lesnar was winning until the match was in progress. That goes to show how far they wanted to go to keep this one a secret.
It was certainly a shock to many. What did you think of the decision?
