4) The Funniest Botch of the Year Award
— Our Winner: Batista Triples Before His Retirement Match At Wrestlemania 35
This a light-hearted award for a botch that made me laugh in 2019. Last year, Titus O’Neil was the clear winner after he tripped while running to the ring during the Greatest Royal Rumble match. This year, my award goes to Batista for his trip prior to his Wrestlemania 35 (retirement) match against Triple H.
This was Batista’s first match in several years and the pressure was on to perform in his final match ever. Prior to the match starting, Batista tripped while trying to enter the ring, something that he has probably done 1000 times in his career:
Batista recovered and went on to put on one of the best matches at Wrestlemania 35. Still, this was a pretty funny botch.
3) The Worst Promo Of The Year Award
— Our Winner: Lana Fakes A Pregnancy (RAW, November 11th, 2019)
Lana cut a promo on the November 11th episode of Monday Night RAW. During this promo, she spoke about her “sex-aversary” with Bobby Lashley. She also announced that she was pregnant with Rusev’s child.
Rusev ended up coming out to the ring to question Lana. Lana jumped on the back of Rusev, which led to Lashley coming in attacking Rusev. At the end of the segment, Lana said that she couldn’t believe that Rusev believed that she was pregnant.
This was a terrible promo from Lana. It was also a terrible segment in general. This earns the award for the worst WWE promo of 2019 for me.
2) The Burial Of The Year Award
— Our Winner: Kofi Kingston Loses The WWE Championship In 5 Seconds
Kofi Kingston’s rise to the WWE Championship was amazing. His storyline leading into Wrestlemania 35 was perfect and him winning the belt was the cherry on top.
After a Title reign that lasted several months, WWE had Brock Lesnar squash Kofi to win the WWE Title on the first Smackdown episode on FOX. This was all to set up Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquez at WWE Crown Jewel (which ended up being terrible).
This was a burial if I have ever seen one. Kofi was incredible all year just to be fed to Brock in 5 seconds. I am not even upset that Kofi lost the belt to Brock. I am upset that they couldn’t give Kofi a 10-minute match to drop his title. He deserved a better fate after his awesome Title run.
