As of writing this, AJ Styles does not have a match scheduled for Clash of Champions. I wanted to pass along 5 potential matches for him at the event.
5) AJ Styles vs Braun Strowman
— WWE United States Championship
A match that I don’t think we can write off is AJ Styles facing Braun Strowman for the United States Championship at the event.
Styles and Braun have been involved in a feud for the past few weeks. Styles was narrowly able to retain his Title after pulling the classic Eddie Guerrero flop to get Strowman disqualified from their Title match. Strowman will likely get another Title shot on an upcoming episode of RAW.
I could see Braun beating Styles prior to Clash of Champions to win the belt. That would give Braun three matches at the PPV. That might sound crazy but it actually might be the best way to protect Strowman if they don’t want to put the Universal Title on him. Strowman retains the U.S Title against Styles early on in the show. He would also be involved in the RAW tag team title match at the PPV. By the time he gets to the Universal Title match, it will be his third match of the night.
Braun loses to Rollins in his third match of the night. He is protected in the loss and he still walks out as the United States Champion. Could be a way that WWE decides to go. It is a longshot but Styles vs Strowman is possible for Clash of Champions in my eyes.
4) AJ Styles vs Drew McIntyre
— WWE United States Championship
I was very surprised to see Drew McIntyre get knocked out of the King of the Ring tournament so quickly. He was my pick to win the tournament before it all started.
With Drew losing, that frees him up for a match at Clash of Champions. Maybe he decides to go after the United States Championship next?
I would not mind seeing McIntyre as the United States Champion. It seems like WWE doesn’t want to put the Universal belt on him, so maybe they give him a midcard Title? Could be a way for him to gain some momentum over the next few months.
I will admit that this match makes no sense from a heel-babyface standpoint. While saying that, WWE could figure out a storyline where Styles and McIntyre are both tweeners. I am sure that Drew and AJ would tear it up if given a PPV match. This seems like a solid option if WWE wants to start building up McIntyre again.
