A few weeks ago, John Cena declared that he would be entering the Men’s Royal Rumble match this year.
Several days ago, WWE announced that Cena had injured his ankle, putting his Rumble appearance in serious jeopardy.
We have the latest update for you on Cena’s status for the 2019 Royal Rumble match.
According to John Pollock of POST Wrestling, John Cena is not expected to wrestle at the Royal Rumble PPV on Sunday night. Pollock added the following note:
“The person I spoke with stated that if Cena were to appear in the Rumble, it would mean a lot of people were kept in the dark and I can’t imagine them going to these lengths for a surprise that isn’t even a big one when they’re still semi-advertising him’
Cena will begin to film his next movie at the start of February.
My Take: I am on the side who thinks that Cena was never going to wrestle at the Rumble. WWE likely just used him to sell some extra tickets for the show. Cena has said in interviews that he isn’t allowed to wrestle when filming a movie. Also, the rumor mill suggests that Cena was going to be attacked by Lars Sullivan on RAW last week, knocking him out of the Rumble and setting up a Wrestlemania feud. After what has gone on with Lars, it looks like WWE just decided to announce Cena as injured to take him out of the match.
