A few days ago, there was a report that suggested FOX could be looking to change the presentation of Smackdown Live. The idea is that the show could be presented more like a sport, instead of a mostly comedy show. Smackdown will be moving to FOX in October of 2019.
With the show possibly moving to more of a sports presentation, this also could mean a change on the commentary team.
According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio (subscribe here), FOX wants UFC star Daniel Cormier to join the commentary team. Here is a quote from Meltzer (via Wrestling INC):
“The Cormier thing is, Fox wants Cormier. That’s the deal. That’s where that (news) comes from. Vince isn’t yelling as much at the guys on SmackDown every week, because Vince doesn’t go to SmackDown that much anymore. And they want him (Cormier) for SmackDown. Although when SmackDown’s on Fox on Friday, that may all change. He (Vince) may be at every SmackDown again. But Fox wants Cormier, that’s the deal with Cormier. Because number one, they want more of a sports presentation, and number two, they love Cormier from the UFC, and they don’t want to lose him. So that’s what that is about.”
Cormier is a lifelong WWE fan. He does commentary for some of the big UFC broadcasts. He has also said that he is planning to retire from MMA over the next year.
