WWE is facing some heavy scrutiny for their upcoming Crown Jewel event in Saudi Arabia. For those out of the loop, this is stemming from the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist who was allegedly killed in the Saudi Consulate. Companies with ties to the Saudi Arabia government have now come under criticism. This includes WWE, who will be running the Crown Jewel PPV in a few weeks (which is being funded by the Saudi government).
A couple of U.S Senators are now urging WWE to hold off on the event.
Senator Chris Murphy (Connecticut) had this to say to IJR.com:
“I’d hope that they would be rethinking their relationship with the kingdom, especially with respect to events coming up in the next weeks like [WWE Crown Jewel].
Senator Bob Menendez (New Jersey) said:
“Private enterprise is private enterprise, different than a governmental entity but because [Linda McMahon] is part of the president’s cabinet, it falls into the grey area where the administration really should give it some thought and maybe even prevail upon them not doing it.”
Senator Lindsey Graham (South Carolina) added that “there should be a pause” in regards to the WWE event. Senator Chris Coons (Delaware) says that WWE “should be taking a hard look” at their relationship with Saudi Arabia.
As noted prior, WWE released a statement saying that “we are currently monitoring the situation.”
Do you think that the event will get canceled?
In other news, here are our updated predictions for Wrestlemania 35.
Fucking yes this whole crown jewel event was a complete joke from start
WWE can’t not put their stars in at risk
Well anyone who defended this Saudi deal back when it was first put in place by saying “well maybe the WWE can exert some influence and help improve things in the country” looks like even more of an idiot now.
