The No Mercy Pay-Per-View is officially in the history books. The event saw Brock Lesnar retain his WWE Universal Title against Braun Strowman. We also saw a big match between Roman Reigns and John Cena.
It looks like both of these matches locked in the plans for Wrestlemania 34 in New Orleans.
It has been long rumored that the main event of Wrestlemania 34 will be Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns. This has been rumored since prior to Wrestlemania 33. According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscribe here), No Mercy played a big role in setting this up.
The plan according to Meltzer is for WWE to build up Brock and Reigns as strong as possible for their match at Wrestlemania. As a result, he had a clear plan for No Mercy. Both Brock and Roman won their matches clean, with no controversial finishes. As noted prior, Vince was reportedly happy with how No Mercy went.
The idea will be for Brock and Reigns to clearly be established as the two biggest stars in the company before Wrestlemania 34 with nobody else on their level. Lesnar has defeated everybody and remains the strongest booked star in WWE at the moment. The idea is that Reigns beating Lesnar at Wrestlemania will be a big moment based on how strong Brock has been booked over the past year or so.
Will be interesting to see the reaction for it but certainly looks like the direction that we are headed.
