John Cena will face Rusev at the Battleground Pay-Per-View in a flag match. The winner will be decided when either Cena or Rusev are able to retrieve their country’s flag. The match itself should be decent. What the important thing to think about here is how this match has the chance to set up some pretty great stuff at Summerslam.
Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Live (subscribe here) had some good points about the flag match. He says that he sees two potential outcomes that can lead to big Summerslam matches.
The first scenario is that John Cena wins the flag match against Rusev. As a result, Cena would probably move on to something new at Summerslam and we wouldn’t see Rusev get a rematch. If this happens, Alvarez speculates that Cena could challenge AJ Styles for the United States Championship at Summerslam. This match was teased on Smackdown Live a few weeks ago when Styles and Cena went face to face.
The second scenario is that Cena loses the flag match to Rusev. This would likely see a rematch between the two at Summerslam. If this happens, Alvarez speculates that WWE could do Nakamura vs Styles at Summerslam. This match was teased on the July 18th episode of Smackdown Live.
Certainly, some interesting things to think about depending on what happens on Sunday.
A wildcard scenario could also be Cena feuding with Jinder Mahal at Summerslam for the title. This would require both Cena and Jinder to win their matches.
