There have been a ton of rumors and speculation on why AJ Styles won the WWE United States Championship this weekend. For those that missed it, Styles defeated Kevin Owens to become the new champion during WWE’s live event in Madison Square Garden.
This was something that shocked a lot of fans because we very rarely see title changes happen at live events.
So why did WWE decide to do this? Here are some of the latest rumors and speculation on why they made the decision.
– It was originally feared that Kevin Owens was injured and this is why the change was made. As we noted earlier, Owens wrestled the night after at a WWE live event so it looks like he is okay.
– There have been some rumors floating around that the MSG Live Event did NOT sell out. This is something that would be alarming for WWE because MSG has always been their strongest venue for decades. This title change could have been made as a way to showcase that anything can happen at MSG events (and WWE live events in general). This would hopefully help future ticket sales for events.
– In a bit of an interesting note, the match between Owens and Styles has been removed from the Battleground Pay-Per-View according to WWE.com. It is unclear if it will be added back or what the plan will be moving forward.
We will have to wait and see what happens. This remains as speculation and should be treated as such.
