Brock Lesnar will be defending his WWE Universal Championship against Samoa Joe at ‘Great Balls of Fire’. This will be Lesnar’s first title defense since he won the title from Goldberg at Wrestlemania 33.
Original rumors suggested that the match between Brock and Joe was expected to be a one and done situation before Brock moved on to Braun Strowman.
Will Joe Win?
On Wrestling Observer Radio (subscribe here), Dave Meltzer says that it is still very unlikely Samoa Joe wins the title unless Vince has a complete change of heart.
The good news for fans of Joe is that depending on how the build goes for the match it could set up a rematch between the two. This will all depend on how the ratings do over the next few weeks. If the ratings increase and the angle is a success, WWE could choose to extend the feud.
Meltzer cites the angle between Goldberg and Lesnar last year as an example of WWE changing their booking. They were originally only supposed to wrestle a single match but the angle caught fire and they chose to extend it.
We will have to wait and see how things go over the next few weeks. If fans are invested into Joe vs Lesnar, we could be seeing much more of the feud than originally believed.
