Kevin Owens Addresses The Negative Backlash Towards Triple H ‘Handing’ Him The WWE Universal Title

Kevin Owens won the WWE Universal Title in shocking fashion on RAW back in August. Owens won the title in a fatal 4-way match between Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, Big Cass and himself. Triple H returned to WWE TV to turn on Rollins, allowing Owens to pick up the victory and win the belt.

There has been a bit of backlash from fans about Owens being ‘handed’ the title instead of earning it. In a recent interview with the Mirror, he addressed some of the negative comments.

On winning the WWE Universal Title:

“It was the culmination of 21 years of hard work. I’m 32 now and was 11-years-old when I first watched WWE. When I started wrestling for WWE for a living, my goal was to become world champion, just as everybody’s goal is in this industry basically” (Source: The Mirror).

On some of the negative backlash towards Triple H helping him win the title:

“I’ve heard some people talk negatively about Triple H helping me win the title, but that actually made it more special to me, because without Triple H I wouldn’t be here. He made the call to hire me and he has been a pretty big supporter of mine since I first got here. For him to literally hand me the title, for me that just added to the moment”  (Source: The Mirror).

I don’t see people’s issue with the moment. It was one of the most shocking things I can remember in the past year. Owens is also a heel and the negative backlash only helps out his character. Owens also in the same interview spoke about potential matches against Shinsuke Nakamura, Brock Lesnar and Sami Zayn.
