Bret Hart Says Curtis Axel Is Being Wasted By The WWE

Curtis Axel has had a heck of a ride so far in his WWE career. The son of the legendary Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig started his main roster career as Michael McGillicutty which ended up failing. He was re-packaged as Curtis Axel in 2013 and went on to win the WWE Intercontinental championship. He went on to portray a Hulk Hugan parody (AXELMANIA) before Hulk’s racist scandal last year. He is currently a member of the Social Outcasts faction alongside Heath Slater and Bo Dallas. In a recent episode of Bret Hart Radio, Bret talks about Curtis Axel being wasted by the WWE as a talent. He even has some high praise for Axel with comparisons to his late father.

Here were the highlights:

“I wish they would do so much more with Axel. Curt’s kid. It’s just such a shame. I’ve never understood it from the beginning. Even the name McGillicutty or whatever that gimmick was. I just seems almost like impossible odds to turn that in to any kind of successful storyline. What do you do with that? It never made a lot of sense to me.” (Source: Bret Hart Radio).

Bret explains in more detail, saying that Curtis Axel is just as strong as an athlete and performer as his father: Mr. Perfect was. He also compares him to Cody Rhodes who has been held down by WWE creative:

“I think that he’s really a wasted talent. I think he’s a real talent. He’s every bit the athlete and the performer that his Dad was. I just always thought that he was a little bit like Cody Rhodes where it’s like they never quite gave him the right things to book him to be the star that he was” (Source: Bret Hart Radio).
