With the news of Brock Lesnar returning to the octagon to take on Mark Hunt at UFC 200, it was clear that the UFC hit the jackpot as Brock is must-see TV. Some wrestling fans failed to see the benefits from a WWE perspective. If Brock gets hurt during the fight, he won’t be able to compete at WWE Summerslam which is a month later and the second biggest show of the year. Jim Ross on his blog argues that this situation is a winning combination for both companies involved.
Here is Jim Ross said:
“It’s a brilliant promotional move for UFC to help make this, their biggest ever PPV, extra special. Lesnar feels like the final piece of the puzzle that was needed to make this a legit, ‘must see’ show. A terrific event just got bigger. That’s a great thing for a promoter and all fans. WWE was obviously in favor of this booking or it would not have happened. Brock at UFC 200 helps WWE as it will create a natural segue regarding Brock at Summer Slam at most turns in the promotional road through mid July. Win or lose at UFC 200, Lesnar will remain the most marketable talent on the WWE roster in the eyes of many including my own” (Source: JRSBARBQ).
I think it goes without saying that this is a huge score for the UFC as Brock is a proven draw. The WWE on the other hand has a bit more at stake here. JR argues that win or lose Brock’s star power will only grow with this fight. I think it is a risk worth taking for the WWE. Imagine Brock gets a huge win and comes back to WWE TV as an even more legit threat in the eyes of fans? Or even if he loses they can have him come back and just destroy everyone out of rage.
