Bret Hart Comments On The WWE’s Missed Opportunity With Wade Barrett

Wade Barrett back in 2014.

As you likely have heard by now, Wade Barrett has been released by the WWE. Wade Barrett remains one of the biggest what if’s in WWE history for me. I think he had the potential to be WWE Champion. He was big,  good in the ring and could talk. His Bad News Barrett character was really over with the fans. Injuries and poor booking by the WWE didn’t allow him to reach his potential. Bret Hart shares a similar opinion as myself. On the latest episode of the Sharpshooter Show hosted by WrestleZone, Bret talks about the WWE’s missed opportunity with Barrett:

“I think he could have been the biggest star that ever came out of England. He should have been and could have been. He had the right look. He was a massive, tall, really smooth working, believable, credible wrestler who was good on the mic. He was good in every way but he always had such lousy gimmicks. His character was always so poorly thought out and usually in the lamest storylines. That whole last bit he did with the International foursome or whatever they were. The League of Nations. Whoever thought that one up they should take him out behind the tents and let him go. (Laughs) I really think some of the booking has been really lousy from the start and I think Wade Barrett’s somebody that hung in there and hung in there. He waited and waited and waited for a chance to really show what he had. He was always a really good worker. Had a lot of charisma on the mic. Really well spoken and intelligent guy. Great athlete. The fact they didn’t do anything with him, or barely anything with him, was just a shame” (Source: Sharpshooter Show by WrestleZone).

It really is a shame. The WWE doesn’t deserve all the blame though as he dealt with a ton of injuries throughout his career. It still remains a mystery to me why they stopped going with Bad News Barrett. Fans were digging that gimmick.

Let us know your thoughts on Wade and if you agree or disagree with Bret and myself.

  1. I am a huge fan of Wade Barrett. It really hit me with his IC title run. Thats when I really jumped on the Barrett Barrage (lol I had to say it). Any ways, i used to do my own fantasy wrestling. Like if im bored in class, I would get pencils, or pens, and pick a superstar for each of them. One match I really loved was Wade Barrett vs Jeff Hardy. It just worked. It was a match made in heaven for me, and its still a dream match for me. The way I book the match, it was awesome. Even though it was just pencils, I can picture it in my mind. I get chills thinking of this dream match because I know what both competitors can do. I wish Barrett the best in his future. Hopefully not the last time we see him in the WWE again.
