2) Shawn Michaels vs. the Undertaker
In Your House 18: Badd Blood
This match is arguably the greatest Hell in a Cell match in WWE history. It also happens to be the first-ever Hell in a Cell match to take place. The Undertaker took on Shawn Michaels, with the winner earning a shot at Bret Hart’s title at Survivor Series.
The match was back and forth between the two guys with the Undertaker having the upper hand. One of the biggest spots was when Shawn Michaels was hanging from the top of the cell. The Undertaker stomped his hands and Michaels fell onto the announce table.
Later in the match when it looked like the Undertaker was about to win, the arena went dark. It was the debut of KANE to the WWF. He rips the cell wall off and confronts the Undertaker. He ended up hitting a tombstone on ‘Taker, allowing Michaels to get the win.
This is one of only a handful of matches in WWE history to be rated 5 stars by Dave Meltzer. Hard to disagree with this being a classic.
Here is the video of Kane’s debut:
1) Mankind vs. The Undertaker
King Of The Ring 1998
There is no question that the Undertaker vs Mankind at King of the Ring ’98 is the most memorable and iconic Hell in a Cell match in WWE history. It might not be the best technically but there is no way to beat the moments that it produced.
The first moment was at the beginning of the match. Undertaker threw Mankind off the top of the cell onto the announce tables. This was over 16 feet to the ground.
Jim Ross:
“Good God almighty! Good God almighty! That killed him! As God as my witness he is broken in half!”
You can watch the legendary moment here:
If that wasn’t enough, Mankind came back for more. He was chokeslammed from the top of the cage by the Undertaker and his weight went through the cage, hitting the ring floor.
Jim Ross:
“Good God, Good God! Will somebody stop the damn match? Enough’s enough!”
Jerry ‘the King’ Lawler:
“That’s it. He’s dead.”
If that wasn’t enough, Foley was chokeslammed onto some thumbtacks for good measure before losing the match. No other word to describe the match but brutal. Will go down as one of the most memorable matches in WWE history.
